Soulard is one of the oldest neighborhoods in St. Louis, and every bit as historic. From the Soulard Farmer’s Market to the annual Mardi Gras festival, Soulard is unquestionably a top destination in the region. THE FEEL

The history and coziness of this neighborhood has made it attractive to students, artists, and young professionals for some time. The design of the neighborhood reflects European architecture, with heavy use of red brick. There are many beautifully restored homes and apartments, many of which reflect the artistic flair of Soulard’s inhabitants.

HISTORY

Soulard dates back to the early 1800s when the growth of the city reached the French farming section of St. Louis.

The Soulard Market — the oldest Farmers market west of the Mississippi—continues to bring vendors and St. Louis residents from all over the region.

ACCESSIBILITY

Being so close to Downtown, Soulard is also close to major interstates, 64, 55, and 70, which brings in visitors from all around St. Louis.

CULTURE

Soulard’s yearly celebrations, Oktoberfest and Mardi Gras, are known nationally. The Soulard Mardi Gras parade is considered by many to be one of the best in the country, second only to New Orleans.

There are various neighborhood groups, including the Soulard Restoration Group and the Soulard Business Association, that organize events, keep the neighborhood clean and safe, and publish a newspaper, The Soulard Renaissance.

ENTERTAINMENT

Neighborhood restaurants are always overflowing in Soulard. Many of its bars host live music, especially the blues and jazz bands (which the city is known for). Add to this regular pub-crawls, and you can see why the neighborhood has such a vibrant nightlight.

Soulard is also home to the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, which offers tours and samples.

SCHOOLS

Soulard is part of the St. Louis City School District. Public, private, and charter schools can all be found in the neighborhood.

PARKS & REC

Soulard Park | 1.94 acres and adjacent to Soulard Market, this park has a playground and softball field.

Frenchtown Dog Park | More than ¾ of an acre, this is one of the largest enclosed dog parks in St. Louis.
